Have you ever considered picking up a whistle and becoming an umpire?
Umpiring netball is very rewarding and is fast growing as an individual sport in its own right. It requires fitness, good analytical skills and of course a passion for the sport of Netball.
It is part of Papakura Netball Centre’s mission to provide a quality competition for all. This includes setting the qualifications required per grade and being at the required fitness level to be able to have good position, vision, and timing. We all expect and deserve to have a well-managed game.

APRIL FITNESS TESTING DATES
When: Tuesday 5th, 12th, 19th and 21st April
Where: Papakura Netball Centre Hall
Time: 6pm Warm Up, 6:30pm test starts
What is Fitness Testing?
The Yo-Yo Test measures your VO2 Max which is the maximum rate at which the heart, lungs, and muscles can effectively use oxygen during exercise. The Yo-Yo Test is used as a way of measuring a person's individual aerobic capacity and it’s how Netball New Zealand measures the fitness of its umpires. The Yo-Yo Test is not easy, but there are ways in which you can prepare to give yourselves the best chance to prepare.
We recommend reading the Effective_Yo-yo_Testing.pdf
We recommend reading the 2020_Community_Umpiring_Fitness_Testing_Guidelines.pdf
Why is Fitness Testing required?
At PNC our current regulations expect a Premier umpire to meet a 13.2 Yo-Yo test result, or at the discretion of the PNC Umpires committee at the very least be on the pathway to meeting this. This was implemented in 2020, to encourage our Senior Umpires to ensure fitness levels were at the level of the Premier players. This change has resulted in a reduction in Officials complaints, and gives Umpires KPI’s they can work towards.
From a National perspective, Representing a national organisation comes with a responsibility to uphold the high standards of the award. Netball New Zealand have minimum fitness standards for the various levels of netball as follows:
