Year 7&8 Player Development Programme 2024

Player Development Programme (PDP) is an extension programme for Year 7 & 8's. It focuses on technical and tactical elements of netball, athlete development (sleep, nutrition, social media) and fundamental movement skills. This programme provides more opportunities for more players to participate and development to develop a life long love of netball.

Our Programme will be led by our very own Stars Player Lisa Mather, with the support of our talented coaches for our 6-week programme.
The 6-week programme will lead into our Counties Manukau Intercentre Tournament, a great opportunity for our players to play against teams from other centres throughout Counties Manukau.

The focus of the Year 7 & 8 Player Development Programme is to:

• Provide development opportunities for Year 7 & 8 players
• Include tactical and technical development for all positions
• Widen and improve the talent base at this level
• Implement a National approach for the development of talented young players
• Refocus on fundamental movement skills as athletes move through puberty

The programme includes:

• Physical skill and tactical development through diverse sporting approaches
• Athlete development
• Integrated Neuromuscular development/ improving muscle control of a growing body and improving and progressing Netball movement skill
• Stage specific strength activities

Why is it important?

1. Early specialisation is not better for development or participation. Athletes risk burn out, over-use injuries and lessened motivation. Diverse sporting experience is better for the child.
2. Progress is non-linear, every athlete will take their own path. Developing motivation, dedication and resilience are essential to reach the top or remain playing sport.
3. Successful athletes are not focussed on winning they are focused on development and performance. Winning is an outcome
